The radio is designed to use powerful Li-Ion technology for longer battery life and includes a 1150 mAh battery which provides up to nine hours of operation with the battery saver enabled. Models are available that cover both VHF and UHF bands to give users expanded options when it comes to choosing a specific frequency band for enhanced coverage. While many radios generally offer one or two scanning options, the VX-231 radio provides four additional scanning options for greater convenience and flexibility. Additional functionality includes priority, dual, watch, follow me and talk around scan options. Exclusive to Vertex Standard radios is the Auto-Range Transponding System (ARTS™) which informs the user when another ARTS-equipped station is within communication range. If out of range for more than two minutes, the radio senses no signal has been received and beeps to alert the user.
